THIS Is Us fans have predicted some explosive game-changing twists that could happen in the upcoming episodes as the new series unfolds.
The American romantic family drama series has been a huge success since hitting our screens back in 2016 and it recently premiered its fifth season.
Randal (Sterling K. Brown) was told that his mum Laurel died during childbirth, but was never given any detail into how.
But last week, during the epic two-part opener, we found out the truth behind what really happened – Laurel (Jennifer C Holmes) actually overdosed whilst trying to cope with the pain of giving birth.
To add to the confusion of Randal’s upbringing, his dad William (Ron Cephas Jones) took him and some how missed out on the fact that Lauren was actually alive.
So this whole time the businessman has been living his life thinking his mum is dead… and many fans have taken to the internet to discuss why it happened in the first place.
Here are some of the best theories you’ve come up with…
Laurel was taken to jail
Many fans of the show think that the reason why Laurel hasn’t been part of Randal’s life is because she was taken to jail with a drugs charge.
When help arrived to resuscitate Laurel, William decided to do what he thought was best for Randal and run away.
He didn’t want the police or child protection services involved so the best option was to flee the scene.
Other fans think that Laurel could relapse at any point and with William running away, her friends locked up and no family, drugs were her only coping mechanism.
But now that she has nothing, she decided to turn back to them to help with the pain of everything else going on in her life, meaning that she could have ended up in jail with a drug related offence after surviving the overdose.
Many fans have taken to Twitter to discuss this opinion.
One wrote on Twitter: “Randall’s mum is in jail! That’s the only explanation #ThisIsUs”
Another added: “Adds up Randall’s Birthmom definitely went to jail right after she was resuscitated, I’m pretty sure they chained her to a hospital bed then gave her a few years on drug charges & child endangerment. Yup let’s talk about the way this system tears Black Families apart #ThisIsUs”

William was too high himself to realise that Laurel was alive
Another theory created by fans is the idea that William was too intoxicated to take in his surroundings properly.
He admitted that he has no memory of giving up his son, so it is perfectly possible to not remember seeing his girlfriend breathing.
Although it’s probably more likely that he decided to ignore the fact that she was still alive.
Lots of viewers have pulled up on the fact that Randal didn’t hear any details from his dad about his life.
One Reddit user wrote: “I mean William was abusing drugs and lost a partner and a child. Trauma does funny things to a brain.
“But I agree it would have been possible for them to have a scene of “when’s my actual bday” “I’m sorry I did a boatload of heroin in that era and don’t exactly remember””
Many fans think that Randal’s mum Laurel DID try to find her son[/caption]Randal was classified as a missing person
Others think that Laurel has actually spent her entire livelihood trying to find her missing son – but never got help from anyone.
As we all know, Randal was adopted by Rebecca and Jack Pearson, who have been his parents from shortly after birth.
So Laurel had no clue where her baby was and no way of tracking him down considering the police definitely wouldn’t try and help her because of the colour of her skin and her history with drugs.
To add to the suspicion, during a chat with Kate and Toby – a couple who were desperately trying to start a family together through adoption – Rebecca told them the process of what she went through when trying to adopt Randal.
The personal assistant joked that the process was like kidnapping.
One Reddit went on to point out: “Ok ok ok so they said earlier ‘we took Randall home the same day’ and Kate said ‘nowadays that would be kidnapping’ so what if Randall IS a missing person because his mom didn’t know where he or William went?”
